Question by debbie r: What is the difference in corticosteroids and steroids?
Dr. put me on corticosteroids for allergies..are these the same steroids the body builders use?

Best answer:

Answer by Kaliu3W
NO. “steroid” is just a term meaning “Hormone”. Anabolic steroids is what body-builders will use to bulk up their muscles…it contains various hormones including testosterone, progesterone. Corticosteroids is a synthetic (man-made) hormone that replaces the cortisol that is normally produced by your adrenal glands (one on each kidney). Corticosteroids are powerful anti-inflammatory drugs, and they are also used for patients who have had transplants (to keep them from rejecting their new organ).
Prednisone, Medrol, Solu-Cortef (intravenous), all fall into the category of corticosteroids. Only to be used for short-term therapy, as long-term can cause steroid-dependence, serious side effects including Cushing’s Syndrome, loss of muscle, thinning of skin and if you stop taking them abruptly, can cause death due to Adrenal Failure.
These are good drugs, to be taken exactly as your doctor prescribed. You should have a positive response from these drugs in 24-48 hrs.

What percentage of MLB players do you think are still using steroids and HGH?

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

Question by guitarman: What percentage of MLB players do you think are still using steroids and HGH?
MLB testing standards are lax. On top of that, players can easily beat the tests through a number of methods. And on top of that, players such as A-Rod have even admitted being tipped off before random tests. So, knowing all of that, what percentage of MLB players do you think are still using anabolic steroids and HGH?

Best answer:

Answer by baseball245245
i dont think many are still juicing. many that play, have, but i doubt many still are. many people think alot are. some go through tests for it 3 times a week. like pujols for example. i remember last year on espn i think, he had 4 tests in one weeks and 12 in one month. clean every time.

there are still on it tho, and that will never change ever in baseball.

I read the negative side affects of steroids and its percursor, andro. They do “feminize” men and “masculinize” women. For men, can they change their bone structure to a completely female bone structure and people would think it’s a woman? Can women get a completely masculine bone structure as well?

How long do you think it takes steroids to bring your cortisol level back to normal?

Question by RebelYankee: How long do you think it takes steroids to bring your cortisol level back to normal?
I have been told I have adrenal insufficiency and need back surgery, but they postponed it due to my ACTH and cortisol levels. I am going crazy in pain waiting to follow up after 3 weeks on steroids (Corteff). My next appt is the 12th – do you think I should try and get in this week to see where my levels are so I can hurry and my surgery done.

Best answer:

Answer by Eric K
Cortisol is a stress hormone. Considering your level of pain, it might be causing more cortisol release. You also have to ensure that you are eating correctly, which you might be avoiding due to your pain levels. Eat a balanced meal with a decent portion of protein, restrict simple carbs and starchy foods, as they increase cortisol.

As far as your back pain, try to perform your normal activities, including very mild exercise, each day. The worst thing for back pain is sitting and thinking about your pain. I would read the book: Healing back pain by Dr John Sarno. It explains our subconscious reinforcement of pain.

I hope this helps.

Q&A: What are the effects of taking steroids?

Friday, August 13th, 2010

Question by Mr batch: What are the effects of taking steroids?
I’ve got a project over half-term and i need to know the exact effects of steroids, the good and the bad.

Best answer:

Answer by Medic_13
I assume that you are talking about anabolic steroids and not cortico-steroids.

Anabolic steroids increase muscle mass and cause the body to produce more testosterone. In some situations, they can be used to help in cases of general growth disorders and to help the healing process of certain injuries. They are legally available by prescription for these purposes.
Negative side effects of anabolic steroids include immune system suppresion, hair loss, and psychological problems including psychosis and so called ‘roid rage. Because ananbolic steroids are sex hormone variants, they can also lead to sexual side effects like breast development, lactation(milk production), and erectile dysfunction in men and develpoment of certain male characteristics in women. Doctors who prescribe anabolic steroids would be cautions of any of these side effects.

How has Steroids affected your view on Major League Baseball?

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

Question by dodgerfanlemus: How has Steroids affected your view on Major League Baseball?
Not just the majors but even just baseball as a sport itself? Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, Mark Macguire, and now Alex Rodriguez are all great athletes whose reputations have been tainted by the use of steroids. I love baseball, it’s my favorite sport to watch, but with all the talk about steroids going on and about, I dont even know anymore…

Best answer:

Answer by D
It hasn’t affected it in any way whatsoever. This is life. People cheat. The ones that cheat usually get ahead. This goes for every aspect of life. Just look what happened in the business world. If you have a sunshine and rainbows view on life, then welcome to reality.

Why does a different steroid test have to be developed for each anabolic steroids?

by トウー

Question by Kristie M: Why does a different steroid test have to be developed for each anabolic steroids?
Anabolic steroids work in the body because they bind to the cellular receptors for testosterone and stimulate the testosterone response in the body. However, drug tests are more selective than these receptors, and so a different drug test has to be developed for each anabolic steroid. Why is this?

Best answer:

Answer by josh m
because each one has a slightly different metabolite… most steroids are slight variations of testosterone and when your body metabolises them, each one creates a slightly diff metabolite.. if you are taking testosterone though, then a blood test must be used.. your body alread has testosterone in it so the precense of testosterone metabolites does not necessarily mean a postitive for steroid use,, test is normally tested for using some type of medically accepted scale that creates limits for the normal amount of test that would be in a normal person of a certain age etc… if you have more test floating around in you then you are suspected of adding into your system

Question by Joe C: How are steroids taken and give some information about the drug?
I am interested to hear how steroids are taken (Ingested, injected etc) and how often they are taken by MLB players. Also if you could give some idea what steroids do to the body and how the improve your muscles and yet hurt much of the rest of your body I would greatly appreciate it!

I am doing a report on it since it has been in the recent news.

Best answer:

Answer by daddyrx
Anabolic steroids can be introduced into the body 3 different ways.
- Orally: Winstrol (stanozolol)
- Injected: Deca-Durabolin (oxandrolone)
- TransDermally: TestoDerm (testosterone)

Google anabolic steroids and the individual drugs and you should get all the information you need.
